Alphabetical list of candidates

By request, here is an alphabetical list by surname of the 297 candidates in the 1998 Assembly election. Successful candidates (ie members of the Assembly) are marked in strong type with a link to their page on the Assembly's own web-site.

MEP refers to those who won seats in the June 1994 European election (Hume and Paisley - the third MEP, Nicholson, was not a candidate for the Assembly). All three were subsequently re-elected in the 1999 European election. The five unsuccessful candidates in 1999 (McLaughlin, Ervine, McCartney, Neeson and Anderson) had all been candidates in the Assembly election, and indeed all apart from Anderson were elected.

MP refers to those who won seats in the May 1997 Westminster election. If the constituency name is in bold, the candidate stood in the same constituency in both the 1997 Westminster election and the 1998 Assembly election. If they stood in a different constituency in 1997 and 1998, the 1997 constituency is prefixed with an ampersand (&).

* means that the candidate was elected in May 1996 to the Forum/Talks from the same constituency.
# means that the candidate was elected in May 1996 to the Forum/Talks from the party's regional (ie all of Northern Ireland) list of candidates.
| means that the candidate was elected in May 1996 to the Forum/Talks from a different constituency (ie Martin McGuinness).

Candidates who also won seats in the May 1997 local government elections are described as 'Cllr'.
Unsuccessful candidates in those elections are noted by a ©, which is meant to look like a copyright symbol - if it doesn't, please let me know.
The District Electoral Area is given in italics in each case.

Note: A number of candidates in the 1998 Assembly elections had been elected as MPs or councillors before 1997 but did not win seats in that year (and one had been an MEP from 1979 to 1989), and a great number were unsuccessful candidates in 1996 because of the unusual format of those elections. I am experimenting with noting those who were elected in previous province-wide elections (Europe; Westminster; 1982 Assembly, 1975 Constitutional Convention; 1973 Assembly; Stormont pre-1973), but I have no plans to include previous or subsequent performance in district council elections apart from 1997, or details of unsuccessful candidacy in higher level elections before 1997. This information can be deduced in one or two cases (the 1995 North Down by-election; the 1994 European election) from other pages on this site. Let me know what other information would be useful, or how the presentation could be improved. Several candidates - Mallon, McAughtrey, Brid Rodgers - had been members of the Irish Senate though none (I think) had ever been TDs, and none (I am not quite sure about McAughtrey) were Senators at the time of the election.

Changes of party are noted only if a candidate's party affiliation in 1998 was different to their affiliation when they previously won an election, or in the case of successful Assembly candidates. (I am aware of a few unsuccessful candidates who have changed allegiance since - Bleakes has left the Conservative Party; McCaughan joined Alliance - but it is quite impossible to keep a systematic tally.)
