The local authority comprises all of the old Newry and Mourne, and Down District Councils, with the inclusion of part of Ballyward from the old Banbridge district.

SDLP: 20,321 (30.9%), 14 councillors
UUP: 7,527 (11.5%), 3 councillors

Green: 1,417 (2.2%)

2011 Census: 124,059 "Catholic" (72.32%); 41,009 "Protestant" (23.91%); 862 Other (0.50%); 5,603 None (3.27%)

The notional results given above are my best guess projection of the 2011 results on the new boundaries - a "backcast" rather than a forecast. Two other commentators, known to me only as Irish Observer and Faha, have also projected the results in each DEA. They differ from me on the notional seats for each party as follows:
My projection: 16 SF, 14 SDLP, 5 UUP, 3 DUP, 1 UKIP and 1 Ind Nat.
Irish Observer: 15 SF, 15 SDLP, 5 UUP, 4 DUP, 1 UKIP, 1 Ind Nat.
Faha: 16 SDLP, 15 SF, 4 DUP, 3 UUP, 2 Ind Nats, 1 UKIP.
