The most interesting aspect of the 2005 election in Cookstown was that it did not take place in one of the three electoral areas. In Ballinderry DEA, only six candidates were nominated for six available seats, making an election irrelevant and allowing the candidates to become the first councillors elected in 2005. Overall, the DUP picked up a seat previously held by an Independent, while the SDLP made a rare gain at the expense of Sinn Fein.

**Only two of the three electoral areas in Cookstown voted in the 2005 local government elections; in Ballinderry the number of candidates (2 SF, 2 SDLP, 1 DUP and 1 UUP) was equal to the number of seats (six), so no vote was held.
* A change in legislation in 2001 made it impossible for candidates to describe themselves as "Independent Unionist". However the sole "Independent" candidate had previously sat as an "Independent Unionist" councillor and describes himself as "Independent Unionist" on the Cookstown Council web-site.

No poll was conducted in the Ballinderry Electoral Area as the number of candidates was the
same as the number of seats available. Therefore there was no change in party strength.
