The DUP gained overall control of Ards Borough Council for the first time, winning 12 seats on 52% of the vote. They made three gains at the expense of the Alliance, UUP and Independents.

Only three
of the four electoral areas in Ards voted in the 2001 local government elections;
in Ards East the number of candidates (three UUP, two DUP and one Alliance)
was equal to the number of seats (six), so no vote was held.
** A change in legislation in 2001 made it impossible to run as an "Independent
Unionist", so a number of "Independent" candidates in 2001 had previously
been "Independent Unionists", and the only successful "Independent" candidate,
Wilbert Magill, is described as an "Independent Unionist" on the Ards Council
website.
