The 2019 Westminster Elections in Northern Ireland

The Elections

The 12 December 2019 general election, called three years early by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, followed a protracted parliamentary stand-off around the passing of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement. UK-wide, the Conservatives won 43.6% of the vote and secured an overall majority of 80. In Northern Ireland four seats changed hands. The SDLP recovered two of the three seats they lost in 2017; one from the DUP in South Belfast and the other from Sinn Fein in Foyle. Sinn Fein offset their loss in Foyle by picking up North Belfast from the DUP. Alliance performed strongly, garnering almost 17% of the vote and winning the North Down seat vacated by Independent Lady Sylvia Hermon. For the first time ever, Northern Ireland elected more Nationalists than Unionists (though Unionist parties were still well ahead in vote share).
