Ind U for 1989 includes 14,087 votes cast for candidates described as "Unionist", of whom 14 were elected, and 1,717 votes cast for an "Independent Unionist" who was also elected; the "Protestant" elected in Newry and Mourne has not been included in this category. For 1985 the designation covers 5,363 votes cast for "Independent Unionists", of whom 4 were elected; 2,930 votes cast for candidates just described as "Unionists", 3 of whome were elected; and 487 votes for a "United Unionist" elected in Cookstown.
