Background to the Research
- Five years after the introduction of the
Fair Employment (Northern Ireland) Act 1989, the Secretary of State
asked the Standing Advisory Commission on Human Rights to review employment
equality in Northern Ireland.
- This book forms the second part of a three-volume
series summarising research undertaken by researchers throughout 1995
and 1996 as part of their review of employment equality. This volume
concentrates on the social and economic context of fair employment
legislation and examines the public policy approach of Government.
Research Approach
- The volume offers a comprehensive review
of employment, unemployment, the labour market, training and education
developments and social policy initiatives in the context of employment
equality issues.
- Participants in the research included
employers, the unemployed, policy makers, and personnel from the statutory,
private and voluntary sector. A wide variety of methods ranging from
structured questionnaires to secondary data analysis were used.
