Paula has worked in the field of Diabetes research since 2004 and, since 2008, has focused her research efforts on determining the therapeutic applicability of diabetes drugs, particularly GLP-1 analogues, in the treatment of Alzheimers disease. The pre-clinical data generated from this work, in addition to promising results obtained elsewhere, has influenced the decision by the Alzheimers Society and others, to invest in a clinical trial of liraglutide (Victoza®) in early Alzheimers disease (http://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT01843075). Paula has worked with charitable organisations (such as the Alzheimers Society and Alzheimers Research UK) and pharmaceutical companies to generate pre-clinical data packages on promising drug candidates for the treatment of Alzheimers disease. She has also worked in collaboration with colleagues at Queen’s University Belfast to identify potential markers for the diagnosis of Alzheimers disease. Paula took up her post as lecturer in Stratified Medicine in October 2013, and will continue to pursue research into stratification of patients with Diabetes and Alzheimers disease.
