Issue No: 8 - Nov/2019

Introduction

Welcome to the November edition of the ARK newsletter. In this issue, we highlight a recent publication, an update on our attitudes surveys, and a recent collaboration with the BBC. With the general election coming up soon, ARK is the perfect place to find out about previous election results.

Ten Chapters of the Troubles

The BBC has recently launched a new resource about the history of the conflict. The resource is entitled 'Ten Chapters of the Northern Ireland Troubles' and will be comprised of ten digital episodes about the Troubles. Three of the chapters are currently available on-line and the remaining chapters will be added soon.

These multi-media stories are told using primary source material from the BBC News archive, with extensive links to relevant material on Conflict Archive on the Internet (CAIN). The episodes focus on the period from the 1950s to the 1990s, and include videos and imagery from BBC News NI's newly-digitised archive.

Northern Ireland Elections

The news is dominated by the General Election to be held on 12 December. If you want to find out about the results of previous elections, then go to Northern Ireland Elections. This is a comprehensive archive of the results for all elections in Northern Ireland since 1973, including European, Westminster, Assembly and local elections, as well as referenda.

Run by Nicholas Whyte, the site also contains historical information, going back to elections in 1885.

Update on ARK Surveys

ARK's three annual public attitudes surveys ask people of all ages in Northern Ireland about issues affecting their lives.
  • The 2019 Northern Ireland Life & Times Survey is underway, and asks people about a range of current topics, including politics, breastfeeding, road safety, community relations, and much more.
  • Young Life & Times asks 16 year olds about the issues affecting their lives. This year's survey includes questions on breastfeeding, politics, community relations, and community safety. Fieldwork is starting soon.
  • Kids' Life & Times focuses on the attitudes of children in Primary 7 to key issues affecting their lives. The 2019 survey will begin soon.
The data provide important evidence which informs public and policy debate. So if you are invited to participate in any of the surveys, please say 'yes'!
