2015 is flying by and as ever it's been a busy month for ARK. This month's newsletter highlights our recent publications, new digital resources, recent and forthcoming events.
 

Invitation to launch of Conflict Textiles website on CAIN

Conflict Textiles is home to a vast collection of international textiles, exhibitions and associated events, all of which focus on elements of conflict and human rights abuses. It will be launched at the Tower Museum Derry~Londonderry, Thursday 19th November 2-4pm

Young people's rights and their sense of belonging

Dirk Schubotz, Director of Young Life and Times has written a new update on young people's rights and their sense of belonging drawing on YLT data. This update coincides with the UNCRC Monitoring Report of how the UK is doing in relation to the Implementation of Children's rights.

British Society of Gerontology in Northern Ireland: Most recent event

The ARK Ageing Programme is part of a team that have recently set up a branch of the British Society of Gerontology in Northern Ireland. The most recent event was on Tuesday 27 October, and the two presentations had a focus on inclusivity:
  • Wise owls revisited: Involving Older People in Research on Ageing, by Professor Jill Manthorpe, Kings College London
  • 'My Home Life': Improving Quality of Life in Care Homes in Northern Ireland, by Sarah Penney, Ulster University

ARK Ageing Programme: Visiting Fellow John Williams

The ARK Ageing Programme were very pleased to host Professor John Williams as Visiting Fellow in October. The team worked with AgeNI and the Disability Research Network on a wide variety of events across Northern Ireland. Full details of John's visit are available here

New additions to PRONI Records on CAIN

As part of ongoing work between CAIN and the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) previously secret records relating to 1985 are now freely available online.
The additional selection of material, which amounts to just over 200 documents, covers events leading up to and the immediate aftermath of the signing of the Anglo-Irish Agreement on 15 November 1985 as well as other ongoing political and security matters such as parades, flags, the Irish language and the issue of the MacBride Principles.

Dates for your diary: Forthcoming ARK seminars

Two ARK seminar will be held over the next few weeks.
  • 26 Nov 2015 Dr Philip McDermot will present a seminar on Attitudes towards minority ethnic people and migrant workers drawing on the 2014 NILT findings. The seminar will take place in Derry~Londonderry at the Holywell Diverse City Community Partnership.
  • 16 Dec 2015 Dr Duncan Morrow will present some of the finding from the Life and Times survey series by super council area. This seminar will take place at NICVA in Belfast.
