Social Mobility, Political Preferences, Attitudes and Behaviour in Northern Ireland - 1996

Principal Investigators :
Richard Breen, Nuffield College, Oxford

Years: 1996

Description:

The survey was designed as a part replication of the original 1973/74 ‘Irish mobility survey’ and as a companion survey for a social mobility study carried out in the early 1990s by the Economic and Social Research Institute in the Republic of Ireland. As well as questions about the socio-economic background and economic activity of the respondent, his/her partner and parents, the survey included a number of batteries of social attitudes questions, mainly about political topics, and questions about the cultural activities and social capital networks of the respondent.

Data was collected for the present economic activity of the respondent and up to the first fifteen of his/her economic activities. The tabulations provided here cover the respondents’ first and present economic activities only. A limited amount of information was collected for each person in the household (up to ten people); the tabulations provided here cover only the respondent, his/her partner, and parents.

The sample consists of 3,024 individuals and is a representative sample of all adults aged between 21 and 65 and living in Northern Ireland in 1996. The response rate was 64.2%. The interview schedule was administered by computer at point of interview (CAPI).
