Socialisation into conflict, Secondary school sample, 1971

Principal Investigators:
James Russell (University of Strathclyde)

Years:
1971-2
Description:

This is one of two surveys exploring socialisation into conflict during the early 1970s. 1, 939 boys in grammar or secondary intermediate schools across Northern Ireland took part, either in Year 1 or Year 4 (aged 11-12 or 13-15). Fieldwork ran in early 1971. A survey of 1,116 primary school boys began in November 1971, and lasted into 1972. The questions in both surveys focused on politics and society during a time of disorder. In particular, attitudes to Government and discord were examined, alongside school, social, religious, and national structures and beliefs, in order to identity the relative importance of school and community upon political learning.
