Issue No: 9 - Nov/2018

Introduction

Welcome to the November edition of the ARK newsletter. This month highlights how members of the ARK Ageing Team collaborated in a new model of deliberative engagement on social care. New publications and events are also listed.

Attitudes to refugees

Attitudes to refugees
On 22 November, Lucy Michael (Ulster University), presented a seminar exploring attitudes to asylum seekers and refugees. As well as highlighting international research and statistics on this issue, Lucy explored data from the 2017 Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey, and Young Life and Times surveys.

As with most ARK events, materials from the event (video and presentation slides) are available on the ARK website. A Research Update is also available online.

Citizens' Assembly

Three members of the ARK team (Ann Marie Gray, Alexandra Chapman and Gemma Carney) were involved in the recent Citizens' Assembly held in Belfast in October and November.

The Assembly focused on key issues relating to social care, including public aspirations for a social care system fit for the future, as well as the roles played by the health service, communities and individuals. The event, held over two weekends, also tested out a model of deliberative engagement that may be adopted by government or other bodies to address further contested issues.

Marking Anniversaries

2018 marks the 20th anniversary of the first Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey. Since 1998, 27,489 adults have taken part in this annual survey, which monitors public opinion to key social issues. Many of the questions are asked every year, and provide a significant time series of public opinion during an important time in Northern Ireland's history.

Two recently-published Research Updates make use of this important time-series:

Gillian Robinson

Gillian Robinson
Gillian Robinson, ARK's founding Director, has retired from the School of Applied Social and Policy Sciences, Ulster University.

Gillian was particularly involved in exploring social attitudes in Northern Ireland. She was a founder of the Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey in 1998, and had previously worked on the analysis and dissemination of the Northern Ireland Social Attitudes Survey which ran from 1989 to 1996.

Gillian has taken on an Emeritus position and so we look forward to her continuing engagement with ARK.

In 2017, Volunteer Now funded questions in the Young Life and Times Survey on the experiences of, and attitudes to, volunteering of 16 year olds. The findings from the survey, along with their implications, will be highlighted at an event on 5 December in Malone House, Belfast. (Please note the change of date)

The event is free, but places need to be booked in advance.
