Carers NI and the ARK Ageing Programme Seminar

To mark the start of Carers week we are pleased to host a seminar by ARK Ageing Programme Visiting Fellow Professor Sue Yeandle.

This seminar will offer a perspective based on ongoing research on the emergence and impact of carers organisations in Europe, North America, Australia-New Zealand and East Asia and their gradual progress towards the formation of an international carers movement.

This seminar was held on Monday 8 June 2015, from 12:00 - 13:00, in Room 8K14B, Boardroom, Ulster University Jordanstown.

Launch of the 2014 Young Life and Times (YLT) and Kids’ Life and Times (KLT) surveys

2014 Young Life and Times (YLT) and Kids’ Life and Times (KLT) surveys were published at an event at Queen’s University Belfast.

The two annual surveys are undertaken by ARK, a joint initiative by Queen’s University and Ulster University. The surveys aim to give insights into the lives of children and young people across Northern Ireland at important life stages, namely when they have reached the end of their primary school education (KLT) and when they are 16 years old (YLT).

The launch event focused on autism and rights and was addressed by Koualla Yiasouma, the Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People.

This seminar focuses on 'Children and young people’s awareness, knowledge, and attitudes towards autism in Northern Ireland'.

This Seminar was presented on 12 May 2015 at Queens University, Belfast.

Representing Age

This event marked the launch of a branch of the British Society of Gerontology in Northern Ireland (BSGNI). The aim of the society is to increase awareness of social gerontology, and to develop a vibrant, cross sector, social gerontology research network within Northern Ireland.

The Provision of Inclusive services to older lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) Adults in Residential Care Environments in Wales.

In this seminar, Paul Willis (Swansea University) discusses his recent research on LGB adults in residential care environments in Wales.

The seminar took place on the 5 Feb 2015 at 2.30pm in the Old Staff Common Room, Queens University.

2013 NILT Survey - Preview of Results Seminar

To mark the launch of the 2013 Northern Ireland Life and Times survey, Gráinne Kelly gave a short presentation of some of the survey results on the theme of Flying the Flag: An update on attitudes to markers of identity in public space.

Peter Osborne, chair of the Community Relations Council (CRC), will respond.

This Seminar was presented at Queen's University Belfast on 12th June 2014.

Preview of the 2013 Young Life & Times survey results

Every year, ARK offers policy makers, researchers and anyone concerned with young people's issues the opportunity to get an overview of the key results of the most recent YLT survey, before the full survey results are being released to the general public.

The 2013 YLT survey focused on questions on mental health (including self-harm) and community relations. We will also launch the newest YLT book, celebrating 10 years of the YLT survey.

This Seminar was presented at Queens University Belfast on 16th May 2014.

ARK Seminars 2014/15

This seminar will report on 2012 NILT data relating to attitudes towards Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender issues. Given recent policy debates and legislative moves regarding 'gay marriage' and same-sex adoption it will focus specifically on attitudes towards lesbian and gay family and relationships. In so doing, it will consider public attitudes within the context of broader discourses that often underpin policy discussions on 'the family'.

• Siobhán McAlister is a lecturer in the School of Sociology, Social Policy and Social Work at Queens University Belfast.
• Gail Neill is a freelance Youth Worker and Trainer. Over the last 10 years she has worked on LGB youth projects within YouthAction Northern Ireland.

ARK Seminar 2014

This seminar shows how data from ARK's Young Life and Times (YLT) survey on sexual grooming and exploitation of young people informed a participatory Knowledge Exchange project with the aim of influencing policy and practice in this field. The seminar will be presented by Dirk Schubotz (ARK), along with a participant of the project.

This Seminar was presented at NICVA in Belfast on 28th February 2014.

Launch of the 2012 Northern Ireland Life and Times survey data on Political attitudes

This seminar will mark the launch of the 2012 Northern Ireland Life and Times survey data on Political attitudes. In particular the seminar will examine public attitudes towards the long term future for Northern Ireland and how these attitudes have changed over time. The 2012 survey results will be analysed and presented by Dr Morrow. Professor Wilford will respond and discuss the findings in the light of the current political situation.
