This constituency includes the whole of Strabane and Omagh District Councils. The MP has been Pat Doherty (SF) since the 2001 election; he defeated William Thompson (UUP) who won the seat when it was created for the 1997 election. It actually includes more of the old Mid Ulster constituency than does the new Mid Ulster, and also parts of the old Foyle.

Stage 2: Of Deeny's 6158 votes, 2440 transferred to Byrne and 469 to McMenamin, thus 2909 (47.2%) to the SDLP; 1575 went to McElduff and 233 to McLahon, thus 1808 (29.4%) to SF; 322 went to Hussey and 204 to Wilson, thus 526 (8.5%) to the UUP; 249 (4.0%) went to Alexander (Alliance); 160 went to Buchanan and 68 to Reaney, thus 227 (3.7%) to the DUP; and 19 (0.3%) to Reid (PUP). (NB that Deeny's transfers to the SDLP, SF and the DUP very much favoured the Omagh-based candidates rather than the Strabane-based ones. For the UUP, both Hussey and Wilson live in Omagh though Hussey is a councillor for Strabane.)
Stage 4: Of Doherty's 6019 votes, 2944 went to McElduff and 1990 to McMahon, thus 4934 (82.0%) to the other SF candidates; 295 went to Byrne and 100 to McMenamin, thus 395 (6.6%) to the SDLP; 14 (0.2%) went to Hussey (UUP); and 3 (0.05%) to Reaney (DUP) with 670 (11.1%) non-transferable. (NB that Dohety's suplus was only 57; if there had been less than 319 non-transferable votes, and more then 5700 transferable, the fractional value of each vote would have been less than 0.01 and they would have been lost.)

Stage 7: Of the 2245 votes transferred from Reaney to Buchanan, 1647 (73.4%) transferred on to Hussey (UUP); 16 went to McMenamin and 15 to Byrne, thus 31 (1.4%) to the SDLP; and none at all went to the two continuing SF candidates, with 567 (25.3%) non-transferable.
Stage 8: Of the 1647 votes transferred from Reaney to Buchanan and then to Hussey, 252 went on to Byrne and 197 to McMenamin, thus 449 (27.3%) to the SDLP; none at all went to the two continuing SF candidates; and 1198 (72.7%) were non-transferable.
