Paula has worked in the field of Diabetes research since 2004 and, since 2008, has focused her research efforts on determining the therapeutic applicability of diabetes drugs, particularly GLP-1 analogues, in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The pre-clinical data generated from this work, in addition to promising results obtained elsewhere, has influenced the decision by the Alzheimer’s Society and others, to invest in a clinical trial of liraglutide (Victoza®) in early Alzheimer’s disease (http://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT01843075). Paula has worked with charitable organisations (such as the Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer’s Research UK) and pharmaceutical companies to generate pre-clinical data packages on promising drug candidates for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. She has also worked in collaboration with colleagues at Queen’s University Belfast to identify potential markers for the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Paula took up her post as lecturer in Stratified Medicine in October 2013, and will continue to pursue research into stratification of patients with Diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease.
