Introduction

Welcome to the June edition of the ARK newsletter, which highlights the launch of results from all 3 of our public attitudes surveys. And find out more about upcoming seminars and conferences. The newsletter will be taking a break for a few months, so the next edition will be available in September. We hope you have a good summer!
 

Release of 2013 Northern Ireland Life and Times results

The results of the 2013 Northern Ireland Life and Time survey will be publicly available on June 12 2014. The 2013 survey included questions on good relations, sport and social exclusion, attitudes to minority ethnic groups and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues. As with all ARK surveys, tables of results for every question, the dataset, questionnaires and publications will all be freely available online.

A seminar will also take place on 12 June to mark the results of these findings - see below for more details

Seminar: Flying the flag

A seminar on 12 June will mark the launch of the 2013 Northern Ireland Life and Times survey. Grainne Kelly (INCORE, University of Ulster) will discuss Flying the Flag: An update on attitudes to markers of identity in public space. Peter Osborne (Community Relations Council) will respond.

The event will be held in the Canada Room, Queen's University Belfast, at 11.30, followed by a light lunch.

This event is free of charge, but places need to be booked by Thursday 5th June by phone at 028 7167 5513 or by email info@ark.ac.uk.

Conference: Preparing for an Ageing Population

The ARK Ageing Programme is very pleased to be working with AgeNI on a major conference to be held in Belfast on 29 August 2014. At the Crossroads: Preparing for an Ageing Population will bring together leading experts on ageing to provide an evidence-based analysis of both the opportunities and challenges an ageing population brings, and how policy makers in Northern Ireland can best prepare for demographic change.

Young Life and Times

A seminar on 16 May marked the publication of findings from the 2013 Young Life and Times Survey. The seminar outlined key results on financial wellbeing, and self-harm. A video of this seminar is available online.

Tables of results for every question in the survey, as well as the dataset, questionnaires and publications are all available on the Young Life and Times website.

A leaftlet provides a summary of the key findings. See the Publications section below for information on the latest Research Update relating to Young Life and Times.

Northern Ireland Elections

On 22 May, elections to the European Parliament and new Local Councils were held in Northern Ireland. Full results are now available on the Northern Ireland Elections site. Maps and candidate lists are also available for the 11 new district councils, and full results will be available soon. This site also contains information on elections in Northern Ireland since 1885. In Results from the May 2014 elections will be added as soon as possible.

Accounts of the Conflict

The next seminar in the Accounts of the Conflict series will be held on Thursday 19 June. Ramsay Liem will discuss The Art of Remembering: Evoking Memories and Legacies of the Korean War. The seminar will be start at 12 noon, in the MAC, Exchange Street West, Belfast. Places must be booked by emailing Janet Farren at je.farren@ulster.ac.uk.

Our latest publication is Financial wellbeing of young people (Research Update 91), by Paula Devine. This is based on data from the 2013 Young Life and Times Survey of 16 year olds, and the 2013 Kids' Life and Times Survey of 10/11 year olds.

ARK produces a range of publications, including Research Updates and fact sheets. Most of these are available online. For a full list of publications, as well as links, visit our Publications page.
