Introduction

Happy New Year, and welcome to the first ARK newsletter of 2014. We have several seminars coming up within the next few months, as well as new publications. So hopefully there is some food for thought for all!

ARK seminar series

ARK will host two seminars in next few months:

Sexual risks experienced by 16-year olds. Using research evidence to influence policy and practice: On Tuesday 28 January 2014, Dirk Schubotz will show how data from the Young Life and Times survey on sexual grooming and exploitation of young people informed a participatory Knowledge Exchange project with the aim of influencing policy and practice in this field. Dirk will co-present this seminar with a participant from the project.

Queering the family: attitudes towards lesbian and gay families and relationships in Northern Ireland: On Tuesday 25 February 2014, Nicola Carr, Siobhan McAllister and Gail Neill will use data from the 2012 Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey to explore public attitudes within the context of broader discourses that often underpin policy discussions on 'the family'.

Both seminars will be held NICVA, 61 Duncairn Gardens, Belfast, from 12:00-13:00, followed by a sandwich lunch. Everyone is welcome, and the seminars are free. However, places must be booked by email info@ark.ac.uk, or by telephone 028 7167 5513

Accounts of the Conflict

Accounts of the Conflict will create an on-line digital archive which will offer long-term storage and preservation of a range of personal accounts relating to life in Northern Ireland and the border region during the period of the conflict.

The next seminar in the Accounts of the Conflict seminar series is The Role of Archives in Dealing with the Past. The seminar will be presented by Elisabeth Baumgartner (swisspeace's Dealing with the Past programme) on Tuesday 14 January 2014. Using examples from Guatemala, Argentina, the Philippines and South Africa, Elisabeth will show how records are used in different situations of transitions, what risks archives face because of the sensitive material they contain, and how they are used in the search for truth and justice.

The seminar will be held NICVA, 61 Duncairn Gardens, Belfast from 12:00-13:00, followed by a sandwich lunch. Everyone is welcome, and the seminar is free. However, places must be booked by email je.farren@ulster.ac.uk, or by telephone 028 7167 5575

Publications

Two new publications from The Long View of Community Relations in Northern Ireland: 1989-2012 project are now available. Using time-series data from the Northern Ireland Social Attitudes Survey and the Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey, Duncan Morrow, Gillian Robinson and Lizanne Dowds explore attitudes to community relations since 1989. The full report identifies links, dynamics and trends in attitudes towards inter-community relations and establishes a deeper understanding of their policy implications. In addition, a shorter Research Update is also avialable.

ARK produces a range of publications, including Research Updates and fact sheets. Most of these are available online. For a full list of publications, as well as links, visit our Publications page.
